Southern magnolia, a tree native to America, has big petals which look like lotus and can be made of medicine and part of the landscape.
Southern magnolia is the city tree of Hefei in Anhui province, Zhenjiang and Changzhou in Jiangsu province, Yuyao in Zhejiang province and undetermined city tree of Jingzhou in Hubei province.
Physical features: As an evergreen tree, Southern magnolia is 20-30 meters high with light brown or gray bark, oblong leaves, fragrant flowers, and a white color. It blossoms are like lotus-shapes 15-20cm in diameter.
Horticultural functions: Southern magnolia is evergreen and elegant and suffers from few pests and diseases, not only providing necessary shades for pedestrians in summer but also beautifying the streets.
In green belt applications, it is planted together with red plums not only with space hierarchy but also with various colors, which break the monotonous sequences of space and produce a harmonious sense of rhythm. It has a strong resistance to smoke, sulfur dioxide, and other toxic gases, and can be used to purify the air to protect the environment.
Shen Tong, a poet in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), described Southern magnolia in his poem and nowadays it is world known as "the fragrant lotus on the land".
