Zelkova serrata is widely planted in China and is one of China’s national second-class protected plants. It is a medium-sized deciduous tree usually growing to 30 meters tall. It usually blooms in April and its fruits mature in October and November.
This tree requires full to partial sunlight and prefers moist, well drained soils. It is adaptable and tolerant of heat, little water and nutrient-poor soils.
Zelkova serrata is planted as a lawn or park tree for its attractive bark, leaf color and vase shape. It provides good shade and is easy to clear up in the autumn. It is also commonly used for bonsai, as its attractive shape and colors make it a popular choice for the art.
