National flower of Cuba


Lilium spp, is also named "Lily" in Chinese. It is a perennial herbaceous flower of the family Liliaceae, of the genus Lilium. The plant has a bulb under the earth and a big flower in the shape of funnel, trumpet or cup, facing downwards, out-facing or pointing up. With various colors of flower, Lilium spp has a high ornamental value.

There are over 90 species in the genus Lilium, including a number of garden species. Lilium spp is categorized into 9 varietal populations in accordance with the secondary relationship between the origin of the phylogenetic species and crossbred species as well as a difference in colors and the shapes of its flowers.

To Westerners, Lilium spp is a symbol of holiness. Various Lilia can be found in Cuba. After their independence, the Cuban people selected a type of Lilium spp which was ginger in color, as their floral emblem.
